How often does anyone actually ever have a dream come true? What does that feel like?
Today I get to find out.
In my last post, I described my legacy project, to record the more than 200 tunes I had written up to the day I turned 67, and make them available to the world. In the 14 months since then, I wrote or completed 100 more tunes and got them all notated, printed and recorded with Band in a Box so we could listen to them. Last June, I spent a week in Austin and we played through about half of them, coming up with intros, endings and arrangement ideas for about half of them. And today we step into the studio, hoping to make the magic happen.
I have no doubt that it will. We spent four hours yesterday running through tunes, and the music was amazing, nourishing, exciting, fun — everything music should be. The band and I will be joined by two very special people: Mark Rubin, who was their first mentor and a long-time friend and colleague of mine at KlezKamp, and Richie Davis, who was the drummer for the Wholesale Klezmer Band during my time with them and one of my closest friends. Having them take part in this closes some deeply meaningful circles for all of us.
Now, off to make some mugic — magical music or musical magic. I look forward to sharing the results as they become available.
